is this for you?

Jack Nicolson put it brilliantly in the road-trip scene from the 1999 movie As Good As It Gets:

Not everyone has a terrible story to get over. Some people have great stories, pretty stories that take place at lakes with boats and friends and noodle salad. Just no one in this car. But, a lot of people, that's their story. Good times, noodle salad.

If you're riding with me, know that I speak from personal experience. If you can relate, scroll down. More than anything I want you to know, YOU matter to God. IT--whatever it is, matters to God. But no one can make that discovery for you. I count it a blessing to encourage you along the way.

How to Remain Functional in a Crisis: part 1

Functioning through an emotional crisis almost never looks the way we want it to. I've learned to make SHORT lists of what needs to happen each day and let the small stuff go. Always begin your day with this simple prayer: God, help me! Amen.

Now, for the list:

  1. Feed your kids and yourself something nutritional
  2. Stay hydrated: drink 6-8 glasses of water a day (large amounts of coffee and diet soda do not count. They will dehydrate you, which increases fatigue.)
  3. Sleep. If you have insomnia: See a doctor, don't attempt to go months without R.E.M sleep. Trust me, you'll lose your ability to cope
  4. Allow yourself an early bedtime; the dishes can wait
  5. Reserve  time to recharge. Take thirty minutes each day to elevate your feet and breath deeply (true elevation means that your feet must be higher than your heart)

If your wondering why I didn't list things like go to work and pay the bills, it's because if you let the previous five things go, chances are, sooner or later you'll lose the mental faculties to accomplish the others.

I have more to say on the subject, but blogs are supposed to be kept short. I'll make this a series.

Question: What areas go neglected in your life?
